Vamping: What it is and how it affects us

BLOG

Have you ever heard the term “vamping”? Maybe not, but you may have experienced it. It is an increasingly common occurrence that has negative effects on the health of adolescents and young adults.

Many people stay up until the wee hours of the morning glued to their cell phones, tablets or computers, either chatting with friends and family or surfing the Internet, considerably reducing their sleep. This bad habit is known as vamping.

In the case of adults, before going to sleep, they calmly review the latest news of the day.

The term“vamping” comes from the union of the words vampire and texting. Some factors such as stress, anxiety, any kind of worry, can harm our sleep and are difficult to combat, but another bad habit like vamping is in our hands and we can avoid it. The Spanish Association of Pediatricsensures that during the night there is more risk of being a victim of different types of online harassment, such as cyberbullying (digital harassment), grooming (contact with adults for sexual purposes) and sexting (exchange of photos with erotic content).

Why do young people practice vamping?

– Lack of time to socialize with friends or partners. – They seek to be part of a group. – They wish to have some intimacy without parental supervision, practicing sexting.

Consequences of vamping:

– Disorders in rest routines, which may cause insomnia problems in the medium or long term. – Depression and anxiety. – Weight gain due to a greater need to eat food rich in fats and sugars. – Mood changes due to alterations in rest schedules.

Tips to prevent vamping:

– Leave the cell phone at a certain distance from the bed. – Limit the use of technology at certain times of the night, such as after dinner. – Adults should contribute to avoid vamping by setting an example with responsible consumption.

We hope that after reading our new post, you and yours will put it into practice and thus enjoy a healthy rest 🙂
