BLOG

The bed base or articulated bed were developed for the hospital environment, later, they arrived at homes adapting the bed and the mattress to our well-being thanks to its motorized articulation.

What is a bed base?

As we all know, it can be said that it is a support on which the mattress is placed. The word sommier comes from French, originally referred to pack animal and has ended up becoming an important piece of bedding. In the market there are different types of bed bases, some with a wooden or metal frame on which several sheets of various materials are attached. Some bed bases have wooden slats, which are generally made of beech or poplar. We can also find other bed bases with fiberglass slats. The firmness varies depending on the number and width of the slats.

Why put a bed base on the bed?

The main benefits of a bed base are:

  • It allows the mattress to be insulated from moisture, dirt and cold from the floor.
  • It provides better support and is an ideal complement to any mattress, increasing its stability and guaranteeing a restful sleep.
  • Mattresses are much better preserved during their useful life if they have a box spring as a companion.

Which bed base to choose?

  • One of the most important elements of the bed base is the frame, which holds the whole structure and can be made of metal or wood, the latter being the most resistant.
  • Many people decide to buy a bed base due to health problems, in particular back problems. In these cases, a specialist should be consulted to know the ideal firmness and hardness of the mattress together with the bed base.
  • As we have already said, the bed bases have different types of slats, a good choice will help us to have a better rest. Generally beech slats are used more, thanks to a correct combination of elasticity and durability. We also have metal slats, but they provide less comfort and resistance.
  • We must not only look at the materials of the slats of the bed bases, we must also take into account the thickness and the number of slats.
